Article 3: Soil Building
Healthy lawns are built from the soil upward. While synthetic fertilizers can quickly adjust nutrient levels, organic soil-building methods improve the entire ecosystem underground.
Why Organic Matter Matters
Organic matter improves:
Water retention
Nutrient holding capacity
Microbial activity
Root development
Soil structure
As organic matter increases, lawns become more drought tolerant and less dependent on fertilizer inputs.
The best material for increasing organic matter is compost.
Compost: The Foundation Amendment
Compost provides slow, natural nutrition while feeding beneficial microbes throughout the soil profile.
Unlike synthetic fertilizers, compost does not rely on exact nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium numbers. Nutrient content varies naturally, but the overall benefits to soil health are substantial.
Compost can be spread using:
Compost spreader carts
Mesh rollers
Shovel and rake methods
For large yards, a spreader cart is usually the easiest and fastest option.
How Much Compost Is Needed?
A common application depth is 1/4 inch across the lawn surface.
For example:
A 5,000 square foot lawn requires roughly 4 cubic yards of compost at 1/4 inch depth.
Always round up slightly to account for waste and oversized chunks that may not spread evenly.
Excess material can be used:
Around shrubs
In flower beds
In vegetable gardens
Most lawns do not need compost every year. Applying compost every three years is often enough to steadily improve organic matter levels.
Synthetic vs Organic Fertility
Synthetic fertilizers are:
Fast
Cheap
Highly water soluble
Unfortunately, this also increases nutrient runoff into lakes and rivers. Excess nutrient runoff contributes to environmental problems such as hypoxia zones in coastal waters.
Organic fertilizers release nutrients more slowly and improve the broader soil biome.
Biosolid Fertilizers
Biosolid fertilizers are another alternative commonly used in lawn care. These products are created from processed bacteria used in sewage treatment systems.
Benefits include:
Slow-release nitrogen
Improved nutrient retention
Lower runoff potential compared to synthetics
However, biosolids can contain contaminants such as:
PFAS compounds
PCBs
Industrial waste residues
Because of these concerns, many homeowners prefer compost-based approaches whenever possible.
